A molybdenum coating is formed on e.g. a glass or ceramic surface for forming a metal seal using a solution of an ammonium salt of molybdic acid and then heating in a reducing atmosphere. The solution may also include a manganese or ferrous salt e.g. manganous acetate, citrate, nitrate, and oxalate or ferrous ammonium sulphate. In an example, a solution (pH 4.5 to 7.5) comprises 40 gms. of ammonium paramolybdate, 1 ml. 50% aqueous solution of manganous nitrate, and 50 ml. of a solvent and thickening agent which may be a carboxy vinyl polymer. The solution is applied by rolling, dipping, spraying or painting to a ceramic body at a temperature of 75 to 85 DEG C. The coating is then sintered in a hydrogen atmosphere at a temperature of 950 to 1150 DEG C. Copper may be used as a brazing material, and the brazing and sintering may be carried out simultaneously.
