Upper and lower walls 10 and 12 define a clean room chamber CR of a disk player. The spindle motor elements are supported inside the clean room within a recessed portion 13 and are arranged such that the inner rotor 20 is positioned within the outer stator 40. This arrangement reduces the rotor's radial dimension and moment of inertia, resulting in improved torque, acceleration and vibrational characteristics compared to those of an outer rotor. A narrow gap seal 50 is formed between the bearing tube 14 and the rotor to reduce the transfer of particles and other contaminants emanating from the shaft bearings 16 and 18. A ferromagnetic insert (37, fig. 2) may be used to as a shield to prevent stray magnetic flux from impinging on the disks 30.
