In a wideband receiver for receiving narrowband signals, particularly for use in a mobile radio communication system subject to oscillator frequency drift or Doppler shift, in order to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, the receiver passband is separated into a number of segments as by a parallel array of bandpass filters. The signal energy is in only a part of the receiver passband but the noise energy is distributed substantially uniformly in the passband and means are provided for selecting as the output only a part of the segments, normally that part providing the greatest energy level. This signal is used to provide a squelch control voltage to render the receiver fully sensitive only when the energy level in said part is substantially greater than the energy level in the other segments. If desired, the next highest or any other desired output level may be selected manually, groups of diode detector and gating circuits being crossconnected so that they are biased to provide the various signals in their order of priority, Fig. 4 (not shown). As shown in Fig. 5, the output of the wideband amplifier is supplied to bandpass filters D 1 , D 2 , D n , the strongest signal passing via the appropriate detector diode 82, 84 or 86 to the output circuit 42A, the D.C. component back-biasing the remaining diodes. With no signal input the average currents through each of the resistors 88, 90, 92 are equal and of low value and are insufficient to operate the squelch control circuit including diodes 178, 180, 182. When a signal of sufficiently large amplitude is received all the current passing through the output load resistor 96 passes through only one of the resistors 88, 90 or 92 so that only the corresponding diode 178, 180 or 182 will conduct to make normally non-conductive valve 184 conduct and normally conductive valve 186 non-conductive. This de-energizes relay 188 so that its contacts change over to the " receiver sensitive " position. The application of the system to a receiver for frequencyshift keyed signals is described, Fig. 6 (not shown). The strongest signal is selected from bandpass filters (D<SP>1</SP> 1 , D<SP>1</SP> 2 , D<SP>1</SP> n ,) as before and supplied via resonant circuit (202, 204) tuned to the I.F., to a discriminator (212). The discriminator produces an output voltage which is more positive for a mark signal and less positive for a space. A portion of the discriminator output is fed to the " automatic threshold adjust circuit" (216) comprising a pair of oppositely poled diodes, Fig. 7 (not shown), producing an average of the mark and space voltages for application to the threshold circuit (220) to compensate for frequency drift of the incoming signal.
