摘要 An electric conductor comprises one or more wires of an alloy containing not less than 91% by weight of aluminium and 0.04 to 0.3% of tin as the essential constituents, the tin being in solid solution in the aluminium to substantially the maximum degree. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements within the ranges shown: .boron.0.001-0.05 .magnesium.0.001-7 .zirconium.0.001-0.3 .bismuth.0.001-0.3 .indium.0.001-0.5 .zinc.0.001-0.05 .copper.0.001-0.01 .silicon.0.001-0.2 .manganese.0.001-0.1 and may also contain up to 1% each of one or more elements having a solid solubility in aluminium of less than 0.03% when measured at 1180 DEG F. or below. The desired structure may be obtained by homogenizing the cast alloy, preferably at 1000 to 1180 DEG F. for 15 minutes to 24 hours, to dissolve the maximum amount of tin, and then cooling it at not less than 25 DEG F./hour, either to the second stage treatment temperature in the range 600 DEG to 800 DEG F. or to room temperature, after which it is subsequently reheated to the second stage temperature. The alloy is held at that temperature for 10 minutes to 6 hours, and is then processed conventionally, as by hot rolling to rod and then drawing to wire of the desired diameter. As exemplified the latter may then be stranded over a galvanized steel core.
