PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably obtain a stainless cold rolled steel sheet having a beautiful surface by cold rolling after hot rolling by coating the surface of a continuously cast slab of an austenitic stainless steel with an oxidation inhibitor to a specified thickness, subjecting it to soaking treatment of executing heating under the conditions of specified temp. and time and subjecting it to hot rolling. SOLUTION: The surface of a slab contg.δferrite in the structure as- continuously cast of an austenitic stainless steel contg. about 8% Ni and about 18% Cr is coated with an oxidation inhibitor essentially consisting of SiC, Al, Cr2 O3 or the like to a thickness of >=500μm by a spray or the like. Prior to hot rolling, this slab is subjected to soaking treatment of executing heating at 1,200 to 1,250 deg.C for 60 to 120 min in a heating furnace. The austenitic stainless steel cold rolled sheet in which scale on the surface of the slab is dense and small in dispersion, oxidized scale in the case of hot rolling is uniform, and having a beautiful surface even in the case of steel kinds high in the content ofδferrite at the time of executing cold rolling as well can stably be obtd.
