In a process for the preparation of vinyl ester by circulating a liquid solution of a palladium (II) salt, a metal salt capable of oxidizing the palladium and an alkali metal salt of a carboxylic acid in a carboxylic acid two zones are used, in the first the solution is contacted with a non-explosive gas mixture of ethylene and a lower proportion of molecular oxygen and in the second a non-explosive gas mixture containing molecular oxygen in excess of any ethylene that may be present. Ferric and cupric salts are used and the reaction preferably takes place under superatmospheric pressure. An example describes the preparation of vinyl acetate. |
