PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for testing a cigarette, detecting a local low- density part and excluding the cigarette containing the low-density part. SOLUTION: A local low-density part is detected by computing the nonconformity degree of a density signal f(t) of a cigarette detected by a density detecting means 13 attached to a cigarette producing machine with a signal raised from the detecting means 13 when passing the low-density part of the cigarette through the density detecting means 13 which is a prescribed function g(t) previously stored in a memory means 51 with a computing means and detecting the low-density part on the condition that the nonconformity degree is a prescribed standard or below and the signal of the density detecting means 13 is the prescribed standard or above.
