PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating a halogenated methane such as methyl chloride into harmless methane, enabling to perfectly prevent the generation of dioxins. SOLUTION: In this method for treating a halogenated methane by converting the halogenated methane into harmless methane, the halogenated methane and water are fed into a reaction pipe filled with at least one kind of metal halide catalyst selected from the halides of the 1, 6 to 12 group metals in the periodic table to catalytically decompose the halogenated methane and the water.
