PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject growth agent, capable of intentionally growing a skeletal cell and excellent in biocompatibility by including acidic mucopolysaccharides (salt). SOLUTION: This skeletal muscle growth agent comprises acidic mucopolysaccharides (salt). The acidic mucopolysaccharides are preferably an artificially sulfated sulfate, further preferably polysulfate. Sulfate having sulfuric acid group in a ratio of average 0.55-5 molecule per monosaccharide is preferably used as the sulfate. Mucopolysaccharides (salt) has about 1,000-10,000,000 average molecular weight and includes chondroitin sulfate D, chondroitin sulfate E or keratan polysulfuric acid. The effect of the agent is recognized at a dose of 1μg/kg weight. Sulfation treatment of polysaccharide is carried out by preparing ice-chilled solvent (e.g. pyridine) in an amount of 10-30 ml per g of polysaccharide which is a raw material, adding sulfating agent (e.g. chlorosulfonic acid) in an amount of 2-6 g based on 1 g raw material polysaccharide thereto, adding 1 g raw material polysaccharide to the solution and reacting polysaccharide with sulfating agent at 0-100 deg.C for 1 hr.
