PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit the execution of BA control if some failure occurs in a brake force control device which executes the BA control whereby a greater braking force than those produced under normal conditions is produced if an emergency brake operation is executed on a vehicle. SOLUTION: When an emergency brake operation is performed by a driver, BA control is executed whereby a greater brake fluid pressure than those produced under normal conditions is produced. During the execution of the BA control, an estimated deceleration G is computed (steps 600, 602). If conditions that minimum wheel velocity VwMIN is not less than a predetermined valueβ, that ABS control is not being executed, and that the estimated deceleration G less than the predetermined valueαcontinues for a predetermined time TFAIL, a brake force control device is made to promptly terminate the BA control on the basis of judgment that some failure impeding the fulfillment of BA functions has occurred (steps 604, 606, 610).
