PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an unsatd. polyester resin compsn. which is easily peeled from a film and can control the appearance of flue without increasing the viscosity, a sheet molding material of which an unsatd. polyester resin compsn. is easily peeled from a film, and a process for producing a sheet molding material for producing a molded item having a high compression strength. SOLUTION: This resin compsn. contains an unsatd. polyester (A) obtd. by the reaction of anα,β-unsatd. dibasic acid or its anhydride and a polyhydric alcohol, a copolymerizable monomer (B), and a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer. The sheet molding material has a structure wherein the compsn. and a fibrous reinforcement coexist between two films. The material is produced by adding a thickener to the compsn., causing the compsn. and a fibrous reinforcement to coexist between two films, and heating the compsn. and the reinforcement to a temp. in the range of from room temp. to 60 deg.C to increase the viscosity.
