PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively inhibit the occurrence of hydrogen sulfide from the lower part in the initial sedimentation tank or sludge taken out of the initial sedimentation by adding an anthraquinone compound to the surplus sludge to the sent to the initial sedimentation tank in the sewage treatment plant. SOLUTION: In the sewage treatment plant, an anthraquinone compound (anthraquinone, anthrahydroquinone and their alkylated or hydrogenated compounds is added to the sludge that is sent to the initial sedimentation tank for precipitating the solid in the sewage flowing in as surplus sludge among the sludge which occurs in the aeration tank (aeration step) for aerobically treating organic substrate in the sewage with microorganisms in the form of particles of <=2.5μm, preferably 2μm size in an aqueous slurry in an amount of >=0.1 mg/L, preferably 0.5-100 mg/L per the surplus sludge thereby inhibiting the occurrence of hydrogen sulfide from the bottom of the initial sedimentation tank and the sludge taken out of the initial sedimentation.
