[Also in Division F2] A rotary actuator of a push-pull cable 11, e.g. for steering mechanisms, comprises an annular drive member 25 rotatable in a housing 22 and to which the core 12 of the cable 11 is clamped at 30, and one or two rows of interengaging balls in a channel 35 which maintain the core 12 in a groove 26 in the drive member 25 and also rotatably support the member 25 in the housing 25. In an embodiment, Figs. 1-7 (only Figs. 2, 3 shown), two rows of balls 36A, 36B are provided and are diverted axially apart at the intersection of the channel 35 and a core bore 28 by means of an integral or inserted plastics diverter 44 and guide shoes 45 on the housing 22. A shaft 40 is keyed into the hub 39 of the drive member 25 to rotate it, a sealing bearing 41 being provided. The casing (13) of the cable 11 is cold swaged by its wires 14 to a fitting 18 clamped at 21 to the housing 22, the wires 14 being helically laid about a plastics tube 15 and covered by a cover 16 on to which ribs (19) of the fitting 18 are crimped. A split spacing ring 48 locates the balls. The cover 31 is riveted at 32 to the housing 22, and an access plug (33) is provided in the cover 31 at 30. In other embodiments, Fig. 8 (not shown), a reduction pinion (42) is journalled in the housing 22 and cover-plate 31 to engage teeth (43) on the inside of the drive member periphery, and the hub 39 is omitted; Fig. 9 (not shown), the ring 48 is replaced by a lip (49) on the housing 22; and Fig. 10 (not shown), one row of balls (136) engages the mouth (138A and 138B) of the core groove (126), the balls being admitted through a pluggable vent (170) in the drive member (125). |
