The retention device (13,15) of a paper band (1,2) in a rotary printing machine is connected to one of the band guide rollers (5,14,16). It is temporarily activated to stop the movement of the band in the opposite direction to that of its initial movement (28,29). The retainer comprises a brush with flexible bristles able to be supported against the band passing on the rollers. The retainer extends over the width of the roller to which it is connected. There are several individual retainers connected to a roller and distributed over its width.
