The protected vehicle (17) is equipped with equipment using a satellite-based position determining system (16) which provides input to a comparison unit (12). A second input to the latter, in the form of data stored (11) relating to permissible operating region of the vehicle, is compared with the current position data. The allowed region of operation is specified by e.g. the driver, via a keyboard (14), and is centred on a fixed reference point (15). If the vehicle strays beyond the bounds established by the free movement region, then the anti-theft system of the vehicle is activated (13). This may include activation of a siren, transmission of messages by a beacon transmission system, and possible operation of the vehicle in a degraded mode whereby it does not offer the normal range of operational control, preventing re-starting, filling with fuel, or attaining the normal maximum speed. |
