In applying a layer of adhesive on to sheet material the sheet to be coated is moved relative to a stream of adhesive which falls on to the sheet in the form of a curtain formed by allowing the adhesive to pass substantially horizontally through an elongate orifice which extends transversely to the direction of movement of the sheet and thereafter to fall on to a deflector plate, over the edge of which it falls on to the sheet. In the arrangement shown adhesive trough 2 is mounted horizontally across a table comprising a pair of conveyors 10 on which sheet material to be coated can be traversed, with supports (14) for supporting the sheets as they pass from one conveyor to the other. The trough 2 has an elongated orifice 16 between the lower edge of side wall 15 and the bottom wall 18 and side wall 15 is adjustable at 29 to vary the width of orifice 16. A deflector plate 21 is supported below trough 2 in the path of the stream flowing from the trough so as to prevent said stream from breaking up before it reaches the material to be coated. The trough 2 is kept supplied with fresh adhesive from pipes 22 controlled by valves (23) the adhesive being supplied either from sump (24)which collects adhesive falling through the apparatus, via filters (25), pump (26) and pipe (27) or from a make-up source at (28). A guide element (30) is mounted at each side of the table to prevent the falling adhesive from contracting at the sides. The bottom wall may project a short distance so as to form a shelf over which the adhesive flows and the upper surface of the bottom wall of the trough may slope upwardly towards the gap 16 and for this purpose the bottom wall may be made adjustable to various slopes. Also advantageously the edges over which the adhesive flows on issuing from the orifice and the deflector may be undercut or bevelled and further the deflector plate may be inclined with respect to the direction of the stream. |
