A pigment composition, suitable for incorporation in protective and decorative vinyl resin or cellulose derivative p coating compositions without grinding, comprises an organic or inorganic pigment and a paste-forming amount of a pyrrolidone compound of the formula: in which R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or alkenyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms, specified compounds being 2-pyrrolidone and N-methyl-, N-ethyl-, N-isopropyl-, N-butyl- and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone. The pigment composition may be incorporated in vinyl resin lacquers, cellulose nitrate or cellulose acetate lacquers, aqueous emulsions of artificial latex and aqueous solutions of water-soluble binders for water paints such as methyl cellulose, carboxy methyl cellulose or polyvinyl alcohol, and the pigment composition may be diluted with a solvent prior to incorporation. In examples, the pigment composition is added to (1) a nitrocellulose lacquer containing glycerol-phthalate alkyd resin, ethanol, butanol, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, xylol and dibutyl phthalate and the lacquer then coated on to an aluminium foil, and (v) a vinyl lacquer containing vinyl chloride-vinylacetate copolymer, methylisobutyl-ketone, methyl-n-amylketone and toluene and the lacquer then coated on to an aluminium foil.
