A filled bag 14 (Fig. 1) is deposited in the lower half 9 of a vacuum- or gasifying-chamber, in the loading station (I), (Fig. 2, not shown), of a rotatable carriage 3 (Fig. 1) and on rotation of the chamber into the treatment positions (II-IX) a lever 11 raises the lower half 9 to close the chamber. The lever 11 is operated by the guide roller 22 located in a U-shaped guide rail 23 on the machine frame, shaped so as to lower the half 9 of the chamber in the loading and unloading stations. The carriage comprises several chambers. In the embodiment shown the lever 11 is suspended on a cable 18 and balanced by a counterweight 19, pressure to seal the chamber being provided by a spring 25 on the rod 24 connecting the lever 11 to a double-lever 16 carrying the guide roller 22. Filled bags 14 are fed from the filling machine down a shoot 28 into funnel-shaped receivers 13 in the lower half 9 of each chamber. The carriage rotates in synchronism with the filling machine, either continuously or step-wise. In the treatment stations each chamber is evacuated, and may subsequently be gas-filled, and sealing jaws grip and seal the bag, preferably by impulse welding. Immediately before reaching the unloading station, the chamber opens, so that the lower half 9 passes under the guide plate 31 in the unloading station (X). The sealing jaws remain closed on the bag until the bag is directly above the guide plate 31, when the jaws open to drop the bag, a stripper 32 stripping the bag from the jaws if it sticks to one of them.</p> |
