In a vehicle with an aluminium or other light metal differential housing 3 the steel drive shaft 6 carrying the pinion 12 which meshes with the crown wheel 13 (Fig. 2, not shown) is supported in the end walls of the housing by a ball bearing 9 which locates the shaft axially and a needle roller bearing 11 which permits axial shaft movement to accommodate differential expansion of the shaft and housing. The differential casing and crown wheel are carried by a support on each side attached to the housing wall by four bolts, a fitted bolt 22 and bolts 23, 24, 25 which permit relative radial movement of the housing and support due to their different coefficients of expansion. The vehicle engine drives shaft 6 through a clutch in housing 2, shaft 5 within shaft 6 and a gear-box in housing 4. |
