Method and apparatus for compacting microprogram loops

The number of microinstructions (L) is divided into subsections (Lr) each containing (P) microinstructions. The number of subsections (Lr) is the smallest whole number larger than (L-1)/P. Each field of microinstructions is given a flag which indicates it's subsection and the subsections (Lr) are superimposed on the progeam memory to give a compressed program of only (P) microinstructions. Each of the (P) microinstructions in successive subsections is identified (1,2,4) and executed (4,5) during the (N) iterations of the microinstructions which have a subsection flag corresponding to an active subsection.
