Method and apparatus for joining at least two optical fibres by electric arc splicing

The method involves the application of an electrical light arc (LB) generated between two electrodes (EL1,EL2). The impedance (IP) of the discharge path is measured and one weld parameter varied according to the measurement result to achieve an optimum welded product for each ambient condition and/or equipment state. The varied parameter can be the weld current, welding time or welding power. The impedance can be measured before the welding process and either before or after placing the fibres (LF1,LF2) into the welding device.
