An insert (4) made of metal is placed into a mould consisting at least of two halves (1, 2), and is accurately held in place by means of two support surfaces (6, 9) after the mould is closed and molten metal is poured into it. The support surface (6) is provided with at least one pointed protrusion (7). With the mould closed, the distance from the point of the protrusion (7) to the opposite support surface (9) is less than the minimum length of the insert in this direction. At the same time, the distance between the support surfaces (6, 9) is greater than the maximum length of the insert (4) in this direction.
