To produce a twisted steel cable, with a number of strands twisted round a plastics core, initially the core is formed as a cylindrical plastics strand (2) with a bonded cylindrical mantle (3) which cannot be detached. The mantle (3) is of a softer plastics than the core (2). The core is passed through a cable twisting machine, to be formed into the cable with the twisted wire strands round it and the radial pressures, exerted by the wire strand twisting, form spiral grooves (5) in the core mantle through the distortion of the mantle material. Also claimed is a twisted cable, where the core (2) and the core mantle (3) are both of extruded polyethylene.
