Lossless data compression and buffering of audio signals for DVD

A variable rate compressed data stream is fed from an encoder to a FIFO buffer before transmission through a medium having a limited transmission rate in order to smooth out data rate fluctuations and reduce the peak rate. The buffer is allowed to fill during periods when the variable data stream rate is higher than the maximum rate of the transmission medium. A FIFO buffer also precedes a decoder allowing data to be fed to the decoder at a faster rate than that supplied to the FIFO by the transmission medium. The minimum time delay between the encoding and decoding can be determined by the encoder and signalled to the decoder. Comparison of compression schemes based on IIR and FIR predictors is discussed.
