A process for the production of acrylonitrile by the reaction at elevated temperature of propylene, oxygen and ammonia in the presence of a catalyst therefor wherein a crude aqueous acrylonitrile by-product stream from the acrylonitrile production process is hydrolysed by contact with a base to produce a hydrolysis product comprising ammonia and acetate salt and recycling the ammonia to the acrylonitrile production process and/or recovering the acetate salt therefrom. |
