PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deterioration in the picture quality of a display screen due to a light leak and to economically actualize excellent display characteristics by providing a light shield layer, where an area producing a specific electric field is arranged covering a substrate surface, for a couple of electrodes which produce specific electric fields in mutually different directions. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element has an active layer 101 of TFTs formed of a-Si and a gate electrode line 103 and a pixel electrode 104 via a gate insulating film formed on an in-plane electrode 102. The in-plane electrode line 106 is connected to the in-plane electrode 102 through a contact hole 107. An electric field in one direction between electric fields produced by the pixel electrode 104 and in-plane electrode 102 is cut off by an electrode pattern 110 to limit the rotation of liquid crystal molecules. Therefore, a light leak due to abnormal orientation of liquid crystal molecules resulting from the structure of the in-plane electrode 102 and pixel electrode 104 is prevented to prevent the picture quality of the display screen from deteriorating. |
