The filter device has a filter element (28) fitted in a filter carrier (1) receiving a quantity of tea leaves or ground coffee onto which hot water is discharged, with the resulting tea or coffee fed into a reception container below the filter device. The filter element is made of filter paper and has an annular peripheral edge (39) which is supported by the top edge (24) of the filter carrier, with mechanical strengthening of the filter element edge by folding the filter paper.
