In a single stage pressure regulator, for supplying gaseous fuel and oxidant at a pressure of about 1 p.s.i.g. at varying rates from a supply pressure of up to 200 atmospheres or for supplying chemical reaction vessels with reactive gases or apparatus for measuring uptake of gases by living matter, the high pressure inlet 51 to a chamber 46 is controlled by a closure 50, seating at 52, which is connected to a stem 48 passing into a chamber 41 through a resilient gland seal 47, of natural rubber, a copolymer of hexafluoropropylene and vinylidene fluoride, neoprene rubber on an organopolysiloxane rubber, which also acts as a pivot for the stem 48 connected by yoke 49 to move with an adjustably spring-loaded diaphragm 42, constructed from the same materials as the resilient gland or from polytetrafluoroethylene, poly-(alpha olefins) or polyurethane elastomers or thin metal sheet, which is acted upon, via a passage 57, by the outlet pressure at 56 of a fuel cell electrode 105 which may (as in the Fig. 3 embodiment) be connected with chamber 53 wherein low-pressure gas is fed to electrode supply conduit 55 from a constricted jet outlet 54 of the chamber 46 to ensure a gas circulation through the loop formed by elements 53, 55, 105 and 56. In a further embodiment (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown), the constricted outlet is formed from a length of glass capillary tubing (68) which delivers the gas into a Venturi throat (78) within the diaphragm chamber (61) and a pressure relief valve may be provided between the valve chamber (66) and diaphragm chamber (61) to cater for high rates of gas consumption. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), the chambers (66 and 61) may be connected through a spring-seated valve which is unseated upon excessive movement of the yoke (65) which connects valve stem (73) to the diaphragm (62).
