摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high contrast and to enable a quick response. SOLUTION: This display device has a liquid crystal layer 115 using a liquid crystal having a chiral-sillar-mectic C phase or its secondary phase as liquid crystal material, pixel electrodes 12 provided at one side of the liquid crystal layer 115, counter electrodes 105 provided at other side of the layer 115, active elements supplying prescribed potentials to the pixel electrodes 112 and insulating layers being at least two layers or more including at least oriented films 107, 108 provided in between the counter electrodes 105 and the liquid crystal layer 115 and between the pixel electrodes 112 and the liquid crystal layer 115 and in this device, total sum of values (d/ε), in which each film thickness (d) of each insulating layer is divided by each specific dielectr constantεat frequency 1kHz is set in the range of 15nm to 40nm.
