The invention relates to a process for determining the position of a level (21) of a liquid (2) with respect to an abstraction pipe. Said process includes, during a phase of calibration, the continuous emission inside the pipe of ultrasound waves with a frequency equal to or higher than 15 KHz, in order to create a system of stationary acoustic waves inside said pipe (8); and variation of the frequency of the ultrasound waves in order to determine an operating frequency for which the signal amplitude is a minimum situated between two maximums. The process further comprises, during the abstraction phase, the continuous emission of the ultrasound waves at teh operating frequency, and the analysis of the variations in the signal amplitude, which then allows the position of the liquid level with respect to the abstraction pipe to be determined.
