<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scandium impregnated negative electrode which forms, on an electron emitting surface, a composite layer of barium, scandium and oxygen (Ba, Sc, O) having a low work function in stable state within a relatively short time. SOLUTION: This impregnated negative electrode has a cylindrical metal sleeve 1 and a negative electrode pellet 2 installed to one end of the cylindrical metal sleeve 1, and the negative electrode pellet 2 has a heat resisting porous metal base 4, an electron emitting material 5 including barium (Ba) impregnated in the heat resisting porous metal base 4, a scandium (Sc) ion implantation layer 6 implanted to the surface of the negative electrode pellet 2, and a composite layer 7 of barium, scandium and oxygen (Ba, Sc, O) having a low work function, and the composite layer 7 is formed by the scandium oxide (Sc2 O3 ) obtained by heating the scandium (Sc) ion implantation layer 6 under oxidative atmosphere in the activating treatment of the impregnated negative electrode.</p> |
