The invention concerns a method for locating faults in a part (1) in the proximity of a bore (2), consisting in the following steps: arranging an a/c-excited solenoid (4) in the bore; providing between the solenoid and the bore a non-cylindrical symmetry field detector (21, 22); sensing the detecting signal wherein the existence of a signal indicates the presence of a fault; moving the detector in translation to search for a signal maximum; moving the detector in rotation to search for a signal maximum; and measuring the phase shift between the signal and the solenoid pickup voltage.
