2-Alkyl-, 2-cycloalkyl- and 2-aryl-D 2-oxazolines are prepared by dehydrating the N-2-hydroxyalkyl carboxylic amide of the corresponding aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid in the gas phase at 250-700 DEG C. in the presence of a dehydration catalyst. The catalyst may be aluminium oxide or silicon dioxide which may be impregnated with a salt, e.g. an alkali metal phosphate, and the reaction may be effected under reduced pressure or in the presence of an inert gas. Instead of employing an N-2-hydroxyalkyl carboxylic amide as reactant a salt of a carboxylic acid with a hydroxyalkylamine derivative may be employed. In the compounds prepared in the examples, the substituents in the 2-position are methyl, propyl, phenyl and tolyl. |
