PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a luminescent display in which the metal gloss of a metal electrode is prevented from being incident on the eye as it is so as to be easy to see in a state where no current is carried by nipping a luminescent material between a transparent electrode and a translucent metal electrode, and setting a black material in contact with the translucent metal electrode. SOLUTION: On a transparent base 11 of glass, plastics or the like, a transparent electrode 12 of ITO or the like is provided by sputtering, evaporation or the like, and made into a desired form by photolithography. On the transparent electrode 12, a luminescent material layer consisting of an organic EL material 13 is provided by spin coating or evaporation. Further, a metal having a low work function such as magnesium, silver or the like is adhered onto the layer so as to be about 200Åor less by sputtering, evaporation or the like to form a translucent electrode 14 of metal thereon. A voltage is applied to the transparent electrode 12 and the translucent electrode 14 by a power source 16 to make the organic EL material 13 emit a light. In such a luminescent display, a black material 15 consisting of a conductive material containing carbon particle is set on the translucent electrode 14.
