MONONUCLEAR PHAGOCYTES AND THEIR USE TO PROMOTE AXONAL REGENERATION

Methods and compositions are disclosed for the use of allogeneic mononuclear phagocytes to promote axonal regeneration in the central nervous system of a mammal. In one embodiment, allogeneic mononuclear phagocytes are administered into the CNS at or near a site of injury or disease and the mammal is treated with at least one anti-inflammatory agent. In another embodiment, allogeneic mononuclear phagocytes are administered into the CNS at or near a site of injury or disease and one or more enumerated adjuvant factors (e.g. aFGF) are administered to the CNS; anti-inflammatory therapy of the mammal may optionally be added. In a further embodiment, allogeneic mononuclear phagocytes are first stimulated with one or more enumerated stimulatory factors and then administered into the CNS at or near a site of injury or disease. Methods for screening stimulatory tissue and cells are also disclosed.
