Machine tool for shaping steel surfaces

The machine shapes steel surfaces, especially guide tracks on machine tools. It consists of a gantry beam travelling in the y-direction that incorporates a transverse feed cradle travelling in the x-direction with a machining cradle for a spindle carrying the tool travelling in the z-direction. The gantry beam (2) has at least one compact guide (14) to accommodate at least one transverse feed cradle. The beam is yoke-like and travels above the surface to be machined and has support rollers arranged in pairs on both sides. The support rollers (7) are pre-tensioned by electromagnetic shoes on the surface, controllable in the magnetic flux. At least one of the rollers above a drive (9) is designed as a friction wheel drive to propel the gantry beam. The electromagnetic shoes (8) on the gantry beam slide almost without friction when they travel on the surface.
