Triazolyl stilbene derivatives

o-Amino dyestuffs of the stilbene series are prepared by coupling, suitably in aqueous alkaline solution, diazotized 4-amino-21,41- or 31,4-dichlorostilbene-2-sulphonic acid or its alkali metal or ammonium salt with an amino naphthalene sulphonic acid which contains in the 1- or 2- of the naphthalene ring an amino but not a sulphonic acid group. The dyes are oxidized to naphtriazole stilbene derivatives (see Division C2). Washing agents, washing liquors and detergents contain brightening agents of formula wherein one of X1 and X2 is Cl and the other is H and their salts, e.g. alkali metal or ammonium salts. The washing liquors may contain ionogenic washing agents as well as compound which give off chlorine, i.e. bleaching agents and numerous examples are given. Fillers, auxilaries and foam stabilizers that may be present are also exemplified. In brightening detergents the brightening agents are suitably incorporated as solutions in neutral, water-miscible and/or easily volatile organic solvents but may be admixed in finely divided form with or without detergents. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 717,889.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formulae wherein one of X1 and X2 is Cl and the other is H and salts thereof, e.g. alkali metal or ammonium salts. They are prepared by oxidizing the o-amino-azo dyestuff obtained by coupling the diazonium compound of 4-amino-21,41- or 31,41 - dichlorostilbene - 2 - sulphonic acid or its salt with an aminonaphthalene sulphonic acid which does not contain a sulphonic acid group in the 1- or 2-position of the naphthalene ring but does contain an amino group there. The oxidation is suitably effected air in the presence of copper-(II) salts and the coupling is preferably carried out in aqueous alkaline solution. The compounds may be used as optical brightening agents (see Divisions C5 and D1). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 717,889.ALSO:Fibres and fabrics of cellulose e.g. cotton are brightened by treatment with compositions containing compounds of formula:- wherein one of X1 and X2 is Cl and the other is H or salts thereof. Washing agents, detergents and agents giving off chlorine i.e. bleaching agents may also be present and examples of such are given. 717,889.
