A two-rail locomotive for use in mines, comprises a body 2 and at least two driving or braking wheels 11, 12 engaging the webs 18 of I-section rails 1, running wheels 3 engaging the flanges of the I-section rails 1 which are spaced horizontally or vertically (not shown), to support the locomotive below the rails 1 or above (not shown), each driving wheel 11, 12 being mounted between pairs of plates 13, 14 pivoted to pairs of link arms 15, 16 pivoted to lugs on the body 1 so as to be arcuately displaceable relative to the body 1 to alter the pressure exerted by the driving wheels outwardly, or inwardly (not shown), on the rails in response to the tractive effort exerted by the locomotive on the track via the driving wheels. At least one of the link arms 15, 16 has a slidable pivot pin (not shown) and spring loading means to bias the driving wheel towards the rails. In one embodiment (Fig. 3, only shown), the driving wheels 11, 12 are staggered and reaction wheels 9, 10 are provided; in another embodiment, the driving wheels are directly opposite each other. The driving wheels 11, 12 are driven via gearing, telescopic shafts 20 and further gearing from a shaft driven via an hydraulic transmission by a diesel engine. A driver control cab is provided. A brake may be applied to the driving wheels and/or to the transmission.
