The machine has a housing and at least two rotors which counter-rotate on parallel axes so that lobes on one rotor engage with chambers in the other rotor, and that the free volume within the chamber decreases to a minimum and then increases. The peripheral edges of the chambers have seals which bear against the flanks of the lobes to provide a gas tight seal. Several lobed rotors can be arranged around one chambered rotor. Inlet and outlet ports can be at the same, or opposite ends of the rotors, which can be hollow to provide gas passages.
