Olefinically unsaturated compounds are oxidized to unsaturated alcohols or esters thereof by compounds in which a selenium, tellurium or sulphur atom has attached to it both organic groups and an oxygen atom. The oxidizing agents may be prepared by oxidizing an organic selenide, telluride or sulphide with peracetic acid or regenerated by oxidizing the reaction product of an olefine and an oxide of selenium, tellurium or sulphur. The olefines may be aliphatic or substituted with aromatic or other substituents and the oxidation may be carried out in a liquid solvent such as mono- or polycarboxylic acids, in particular, acetic or pivalic acids, or water, aliphatic alcohols, benzene, nitrobenzene, pyridine, and aliphatic carboxylic acid esters. Examples describe the preparation of a -methallyl acetate using 2-butene and bis-(1 - methyl - 2 - acetoxypropyl) selenide; alkylacetate using propylene and a selenide prepared as above; a -methylallyl acetate using 2-butene and the reaction product of di-phenyl sulphoxide and 2-butene; vinyl acetate from ethylene and the oxidation product of bis(2-acetoxyethyl) selenide and peracetic acid; a -methylallyl acetate from 2-butene and diphenyl selenoxide; and a -methylallyl acetate from 2-butene and bis-(1-methyl-2-acetoxypropyl) selenide. |
