Selective labelling of proteins (I) that contain selenocysteine (SeCys) and/or Cys residues, optionally in oxidised form, comprises; (i) at least one incubation of a (I)-containing sample with at least one modifying agent (II) specific for SeCys or Cys, and (ii) at least one incubation with at least one labelling reagent (III) with similar specificity, provided that before, during and/or after at least one incubation, a substance (IV), that interacts with (I), is added.
