PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound, having a partial structure composed ofα,α-difluorobenzyl phenyl ether and a substituting halogen on a 1,4- phenylene group and useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition and capable of manifesting a greatδε. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [A1, A2 and A4 are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, etc.; A3 is 1,4-phenylene, etc.; Z1 to Z4 are each a covalent bond, (CH2 )2 , CF2 O, etc.; L1 to L4 are each H or a halogen; X is H, a halogen, CN, etc.; R is a 1-10C alkyl; (l), (m), (n) and (o) are each 0 or 1, etc.], e.g.α,α-difluoro-2-fluoro-4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)benzyl3,4,5- trifluorophenl ether. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by reacting a thione-O-ester derivative represented by formula II with dietylamino sulfur trifluoride, etc. Thereby, a liquid crystal composition, having a greatδε, small temperature dependence and a low viscosity and enabling especially the low-voltage driving and useful for a liquid crystal element is obtained.
