PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen and oxygen generator and the electrolytic cell used therefor by which a pressure difference is hardly made between the cathode side and anode side of the solid electrolyte membrane unit of an electrolytic cell even when the generator is operated at a low current, and the membrane is not damaged or deteriorated. SOLUTION: A pure water supply path 23 is connected to a cathode compartment of a solid electrolyte membrane unit 10 to supply pure water to the cathode compartment. The pure water is passed through a solid electrolyte membrane 11 into the anode compartment to generate gaseous oxygen and hydrogen ion therein. The hydrogen ion is passed through the membrane 11 into the cathode compartment to generate gaseous hydrogen therein. Since the solubility of gaseous hydrogen is only about 1/30 of that of gaseous oxygen, the pressure in the cathode compartment is lowered only slightly, and the pressure difference between the cathode compartment 18 and the anode compartment 19 is not increased. |
