PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device that can promptly judged and count viable microorganismic cells and dead microorganismic cells by allowing fluorescent dye to selectively penetrate into the viable cells and dead cells of a kind of microorganism that is collected by a proper means to prepare dyed cell dispersion and irradiating the dyed cell dispersion with a pulse light beam of a desired wavelength. SOLUTION: In this method, the dyed cell dispersion is poured in a transparent cell 3, irradiated with pulse light beams 4A of a desired wavelength and >=750μm seconds pulse interval from one direction. On one side of the direction perpendicular to the axis of the pulse light beam, the fluorescent light from the viable cells are detected through a band pass filter 5 with a photo-diode detection tube 6, while on the other side, the fluorescent light from the bead cells are detected through a band pass filter 50 with a photo-diode detection tube 60. Then, the difference in detection voltage between the detection voltage of the cell-free cell dyeing solution 2 and the cell-containing cell-dyeing solution 3 is processed with a computer thereby judging and counting the viable cells and the bead cells of the collected microorganism.
