Polymeric compounds of the formula <FORM:1115373/C3/1> wherein A represents the residue of a polymer A(H)m which contains at least m reactive hydrogen atoms, m is an integer from 1 to 100; R1 and R2, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups; R3 and R4, which may be the same or different, are aliphatic, alicyclic, araliphatic or aryl radicals or R3 and R4 together with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring; R5 is an aliphatic, alicyclic, or araliphatic radical; and X(-) is an anion; are obtained by (a) reacting the corresponding 3,4-dihydropyran or 6-hydroxytetrahydropyran derivatives with polymers A(H)m, or (b) reacting the appropriate 2-amino-6-substituted tetrahydropyrans, the amino group being optionally substituted by groups R3 and/or R4, with a quaternizing agent. The polymer A(H)m may be a polyether such as an alkylene oxide condensate with a fatty acid, an alkyl phenol, an alcohol or glycerol or a polyglycol.ALSO:Tetrahydropyran derivatives useful as lubricants and lubricant additives have the formula <FORM:1115373/C4-C5/1> wherein A is a residue of a polymer A(H)m which contains at least m reactive hydrogen atoms, where m is from 1 to 100; R1 and R2, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups; R3 and R4 which may be the same or different, represent aliphatic, alicyclic, araliphatic or aryl groups or R3 and R4 together represent a bivalent organic radical which together with the nitrogen atom forms a heterocyclic ring; R5 is an aliphatic, alicyclic or araliphatic group and X/SK is an anion.ALSO:Novel tetrahydropyran derivatives containing at least one 2-methyltetrahydropyran-6-yl residue carrying a quaternary ammonium group on the 2-methyl group and having the formula <FORM:1115373/C2/1> wherein A represents the residue of an organic compound A(H)m containing at least m active hydrogen atoms; m is a small integer from 1 to 100, e.g. one; R1 and R2, which may be the same or different are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups; R3 and R4, which may be the same or different, are aliphatic, alicyclic, araliphatic or aryl radicals or R3 and R4 together with the quaternary nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring; R5 is an aliphatic, alicylic or araliphatic radical; and X(-) is an anion; are obtained by (a) reacting the corresponding 3,4-dihydropyran or 6-hydroxytetrahydropyran derivatives with compounds A(H)m, or (b) reacting the appropriate 2-aminomethyl-6-substituted tetrahydropyrans, the amino group being optionally substituted by groups R3 and/or R4, with a quaternizing agent. The compounds are useful as bactericides, herbicides, fungicides, detergents, surface-active agents, intermediates for dyestuffs, pharmaceuticals or polymers, flocculants, lubricants and lubricant additives (see Division C5). |
