An immunoassay method for detecting acetaldehyde protein adduct specific IgA antibody in body fluid samples employing an acetaldehyde adduct as the antigen, characterized in that the adduct is between acetaldehyde and a fragment of a native protein. A diagnostic method for detecting heavy drinkers and alcoholics utilizing the immunoassay method. A test kit useful for the immunoassay and the diagnostic method comprising anti-IgA antibody and an acetaldehyde adduct with a fragment of a native polypeptide.
