The invention relates to a mechanical arm (105) for connections to an advancing tailpiece (10) of a continuous belt conveyor (84) system used in the mining industry and for positioning carrying idler assemblies (92) on mounting brackets of the conveyor system (84). The mechanical arm (105) is pivotally connected to the advancing tailpiece (10) and has a telescopic boom (126, 128).
