PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction stirring joining method that excellently join two members abutted on each other in a manner of producing a difference in level in the thickness direction, without causing defects in the joining part, without adversely affecting the abutted part thermally, and without soiling the surface of the joining members. SOLUTION: In this friction stirring joining method, two joining members 1, 2 are butt-welded by using a joining device 4 in which a pin-shaped probe 42 is projectingly provided on the rotational axis line A of the end face of a large diameter cylindrical rotor 41, by inserting the rotating probe 42 in or near the abutted part of the joining members 1, 2 abutted in a manner of producing a difference in level in the thickness direction, and by moving the probe in the inserted state relatively along the abutted part. In this case, the joining is carried out, with the rotational axis line of the probe 42 inclined to the lower side of the joining member at an inclined angleθof 10 deg. or less against the abutted face of the joining members 1, 2.
