A surge arrester comprising a plurality of series connected arrester units each having an insulating housing containing a spark gap 4, a series connected non-linear resistor 5 and at least one voltage control element 6, 7 across the gap, has an additional externally disposed voltage control means 10-13 across each unit. The means may comprise a capacitor, or a linear or non-linear resistor of, for example, silicon carbide of equal or unequal value to others in the same string. The means may comprise its own housing, with a finned surface glazed exterior, for example of rutile or borium titanate, or it may be mounted within a separate housing. The means should provide a conductance at least equal to the foreign layer conductance across the arrester and may be arranged to be frequency dependent. |
