Novel betaines of formulas (1) and (2): <CHEM> wherein R represents a straight or branched alkylene group containing from 2 to 24 carbon atoms, an alicyclic alkylene group, an aralkylene group or a group of the formula <CHEM> (in which p represents 0 or a positive integer and q represents a positive integer), R' represents a straight or branched alkyl group containing from 1 to 24 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group, n represents a positive integer of from 2 to 50 and X represents group of the formula &lparstr& CH2)mCOO<-> (m being 1 or 3) or -CH2CH(OH)CH2SO3-; and dispersants containing the betaines are disclosed. |
